Smokies 900 Round 2:
Alum Cave Trail Descent From Mount LeConte – 8/5/17 – 5.5 Miles
Heard that rain pitter-patter most of the night. The woods were dripping this morning but the
sun’s rays were streaming through. A
hearty family style breakfast, some lodgers staying another day and night, the
rest of us walking back down to reality.
Alum Cave already filling up on a Saturday morning
Driving back through the park on Newfound Gap Road, we
stopped at Oconoluftee Visitor Center to look for a lifetime senior parks
pass for Cathy. The cost was rising from
$10 to $80 next week. You could order them
online but they were sold out at most visitor centers in anticipation of the
price increase. Sorry, none at Oconoluftee…BUT…pssst, they just got some at Smokemont Campground! We turned back to Smokemont and Cathy scored
her treasured lifetime pass.
Altogether we were gone from home for barely 30 hours, but
the aura of the Smokies lingers on.

sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world’s joy.” ~Henry
Ward Beecher
